After Thanksgiving

Today is Black Friday, but I am home for several reasons.

I used to love to go out when I was married on Black Friday and Christmas Eve. My husband and I enjoyed all the hustle and bustle. Now I do not go out that much, because I am quite a bit older, do not have a discretionary fund, and single with a single income. But I do like the hustle and bustle that begins now

.But another reason for my reclusive behavior today is I have hurt my lower back. Now I did not go to the gym and workout too much, I did not even go out, I did not fall. Guess what messed it up?

I cleaned up my apartment – really cleaned it for the holidays. I picked up extraneous things lying around and then I went to work on my bedroom. I had not shampooed the carpet in a while and I have a shampooer (not one of those big ones, but a Hoover.).

If you have followed my blog, you might remember that I have fallen a couple of times this year and hit my head. Well, the fog finally lifted from the concussions this week. I decided to not only vacuum my bedroom, but to shampoo the carpet, as well.

First, I had to remove all the things that had fallen on the rug (that I had not picked up) -  receipts, bit of stuff, a little bit of pine straw that Riley brought in – not bad, but it could clog up the vacuum.

After clean-up duty, I got the vacuum ready and started to clean. I spent a lot of time going over the cheap carpet that we have here, and I finally got it to look clean. I then tackled the shampooer. I was already pushing my luck with my old body, but I was inspired, and I pushed on.

I first noticed my lower back hurting while asleep that night. I turned over and went back to sleep – hurting is not unusual. But when I got up, I could hardly walk. I had to lean heavily on my cane to get to the bathroom. It got worse throughout the day. Preparing my thanksgiving dinner was painful when I bent over to get things out of the oven.

By last night I was in agony. My maximum strength Ibuprofen did not even faze it. I brought out the heating pad.
I went to bed early and wobbled whenever I got up. I have not leaned on my cane this much since I had to learn to walk again many years ago.

Walking Riley, a necessity, has been hard. Luckily, I have a retractable leash and I can stay put while he goes farther. Bending over to “pick up” after he is through has been hard, though.

Today is a little better. I have the heating pad directly on the “spot” causing the pain. I probably will be back to normal by the end of the weekend. So, all has returned to almost normal.

Oh, and the carpet looks WONDERFUL!

I do not know what happened to the other post. But Here we go again. Riley is a taking a nap, the parade is on TV, and I am dressed and ready to start preparing things to "cook" for my dinner.

Have a lovely Thanksgiving.

Happy Thanksgiving,

Thanksgiving is tomorrow. I am cooking, but a slightly smaller menu since I have no one else coming. I like dark meat, so I just bought turkey legs to bake. We had a party yesterday at the apartment, and I made green bean casserole. Two others did also, so I had some left. Another thing I do not have to cook. I have had enough pumpkin pie in the last few days to last me, so I do not think I will fix a dessert. I will, however, make my stuffing and my sweet potatoes.

I am ok with being alone, too. I have my little Yorkie, Riley, to keep me company, and I will have the TV on the games, even though I do not like to watch them. The sound of them in the background remind me of other Thanksgivings when the house was full. I really think this “atmosphere” makes me happy, although I am alone.

BUT, as I said above, I am alone and have been for some time. I have friends here, but I am the “matriarch” of them all. For the longest time when I was much younger I was “the young one.” Most of my friends and romantic involvements were older. Since moving to Florida, I have slowly become the oldest, especially with my friends. Most are about the age of my brother – six years my junior. And they are good friends who really care about my wellbeing.

So, on this eve of Thanksgiving I am very thankful for what I have and especially what I have had in my life. With 72 looming over me, I realize, I had lead an interesting and very full life. And I am very thankful for it.

Mornings are Getting Harder

11/7/2018

When I was young I started going to Happy Hours with a friend after we got off from work.  I researched drinking (I have always wanted to know things) and read that it takes an hour for the liquor that you drink to oxidize. I did not want to get inebriated since I had to drive home. I gauged my drinking to fit this. One drink per hour, etc.

Well, today as a senior lady, I do not have to drink too much to get loopy. When I wake up in the morning I usually feel pretty good upon rising and can make it into the kitchen to fix my coffee. BUT, that being done, the woozy inebriated feeling and sets in. I stagger around like I am drunk. This is before my meds, which do help. And of course, a little food goes a long way to help this feeling.

Who knew, that getting older could feel like you have been partying all night?
