69 and Holding

I have decided that when my 69th birthday arrives I am going to hold there. Why? Seniors are not really considered old when they reach their 60’s.
Years ago, 40 was the dreaded age for a woman. It meant she was old and was going to be treated differently. Many women, including actresses, remained 39 for quite a while – as long as they could get away from it. They “held there” – pretty much like what I am doing with 69.
Then things progressed a bit, and the 50’s were old. You could not join AARP until you were 50 and THAT was the senior magazine. I had a friend who hid her AARP magazine, so no one would know she was 50. She is now 84 and hides nothing about her age. She’s proud to have made it this far.
Then there was a movement, when beautiful actresses starting turning 50, that showed that 50 was still young, and many 50 year olds were young looking and quite beautiful. So 50 was no longer considered old, but 60 was.
At some point, though, 60 became middle-aged. It could be because more and more people are living into their 90’s and even to 100. And most of all, many of these 90 year olds lead pretty active lives. So we 60 year olds are halfway to the end. Thus “middle” aged.
In a few years, I hope 70 will truly be the new 50. Then I can proudly say that I am 70 and not be considered an old woman. Let’s hope!

Awesome

I am so tired of hearing this word used to describe, basically, mundane things and experiences. Our populace today does not really know what this word means, and it makes me sad to see so much “uninformed garbage” everywhere I look.
The word “awe” means: “an emotion variously combining dread, veneration, and wonder that is inspired by authority or by the sacred or sublime,” according to Merriam Webster. Another definition by Wikipedia is, “Awe is an emotion comparable to wonder but less joyous. On Robert Plutchik's wheel of emotions awe is modeled as a combination of surprise and fear.”
Finding a sandwich “awesome” is so ridiculous. Does this sandwich strike you with dread (fear), veneration (a sign of deep respect), or wonder (astonishment)? Does it make you afraid to eat it? Actually, in the “olden days” this word was used more to describe sacred or sublime experiences, usually of a religious nature. These experiences were overwhelming when they happened.
If today’s populace thinks that their everyday foods, experiences, and deeds are “awesome,” I feel so sorry for them. Their “sublime” world is basically mediocre, and that is very sad.

This Aging Thing

10/9/2015

I have been writing this blog for few years and I am older than I was when I started it. I am aging, every day. Unfortunately, I sometimes notice this aging thing.

I am not as quick in the thinking department, although I constantly “test” my memory. But I have noticed a difference in thought processes. I also remember things from “yesteryear” quite vividly and it surprises me that I do. Of course, I cannot remember what I ate two days ago, but I can tell you what I did 30 years ago.

This aging thing is a process. I live with all types of people who are 55 or older. I have friends younger than I am, and I have friends much older than I am. But I must say that I sometimes feel younger than all of these people, no matter what their ages.

You see, I do not want to act old, although my birth certificate says I am. My body sometimes screams that I am when I overdo things, but I want to be as current in my thinking and living, as I can.

I watch enough of the real news to know what is going on in the world, as well as my backyard. I read tons of books to keep my mind active. I play solitaire (on the computer with 5 decks) every day, even though my chances of winning are rare. I even contribute, share, and like on Facebook – another thing that I think keeps me thinking young.

I definitely think this aging thing that is going on, can be curtailed a bit. I am trying to keep it from running rampant through me, but I am relaxing through it, too. You see, I am glad that I am old enough to “know” so much. I was talking to someone the other day about the “knowledge” and “experience” that resides in my senior apartment complex. It is so vast!

We all have lived so long through many trials and tribulations. We have survived all of that to reach where we are today. These young people “who know everything” but have not experienced any of life’s treacheries, do not realize what is to come. They could just ask us, but they pat our hands and patronize us as “old” people. We could help them, but they know it all.

And we continue to know more as we age. How many of us have moved into this technical age? More than you would think. We are not afraid of the future. We will bend as we need to in order to accommodate all of these changes that happen daily. We will thrive as much we can and continue to enjoy the present, as well the past.

We are still in this aging process until it stops. I am enjoying my ride. I hope you are, too. If not, maybe you need to try harder. It is wondrous!
