That Pesky Concussion

7/18/2018

It has been six months since I fell and cracked my head open. The gash healed in a few weeks, but since I am "an advanced age" it appears that my concussion (or the effects, thereof) has not quite gone away. Normal, I have read...

There is still a fullness in the top of my head with a dull headache. I take a large dose of ibuprofen (prescribed for other things) and that keeps it at bay most of the time so I can function. But until I take it, my head feels full and sore.

I read that a concussion takes much longer to heal in an older person- wouldn't you know, the first time I have one is when I am an older person. Young people pop right back. Oh well, it could have been worse, I suppose.

I write this because I have not taken that ibuprofen, yet. I can deal, but it is pesky. Sooo, I better get that pill down. Isn't it wonderful to be old!!! Of course, there is  that alternative....

Having a Dog(s)

It has been a year since my dear little Pekingese, Bobby Socks went over Rainbow Bridge. But for the last month I have been dog sitting two adorable dogs while a neighbor was in the hospital - a 10 year old Yorkie (Riley) and his puppy, a female 4 year old Yorkie-Poo (RB). Their "mother" was very sick and in the hospital and rehab, so I took them in.

I cannot tell you how much joy they have brought me. Riley reminds me of my little Puddin, of long ago- same coloring and personality. RB is like a mid sized poodle and so affectionate. I am quite sad that this wonderful experience will end today.
,
My neighbor returns today, and I am actually picking her up later this morning. She wants RB back, I understand, so I will keep Riley. I will miss RB, though. And I am sure they will miss each other - they are playing right now as I write this. I am going to tell her that if she is not able to take care of RB, I will take her back.

Having dogs again has reminded me of what a wonderful experience it is. You are never alone - in the bathroom, in the kitchen, or anywhere else you go. Last night I was stretched out on my side on the couch with RB in the crook of my bent legs and Riley at my feet. Alas, tonight Riley and I will be alone. Technically so will RB. We will miss her and I bet she misses us,too. I am going to tell her mother that if she finds she cannot deal with her with her health issues, I will gladly take her back.

Beware My Red Eye

I have a Subconjunctival Hemorrhage in my right eye. And of course, since I cannot do anything to my body except go over the top, it covers the entire white area of my eye. With my brown eyes it looks like I have a black hole where my eye should be.

I have researched it and found it is common, but I am 71 and have never had anything like it. My friends here in the apartment back step a bit when they look at me until I explain I am not an alien- I just have broken blood vessels in my eye.  And the general comment is that it is a shame it is not Halloween! It is supposed to clear up in about 2 weeks. Unfortunately, there is not a pill to fix it.

Since I do not think I hit my eye, I did some research. It can be caused by some medications that I take and is aggravated by my diabetes. And unfortunately, you must wait it out. I cannot get rid of the diabetes, and I must take my meds to live. So, as much as I hate not being able to do something about it, I must wait.

If it does not go away, as promised by the internet, in 2 weeks, I will seek medical attention. Until then I will sit until that 15th day starts before acting.
