Lawn Tips

Lawns need lots of care to look beautiful, but some things are easy to do and your lawn will love you for it.

Naturally fertilize your lawn
When those leave start to fall from your trees and your neighbor's trees, don't despair.  These leaves are the most natural fertilizer you can get.  You see, the trees take all the nutrients they need from the soil and whatever is left will go to your lawn.  However, when those very same trees lose their leaves in the fall and winter, those same lost nutrients return to the ground, UNLESS you rake up the leaves and bag them.  The best tip I can give you for handling these fallen leaves is to spread them out over your lawn and mow them into very small particles.  These "crunched up" particles will decay and return to the soil.  Your lawn will benefit greatly.  And it will cost you nothing.  Hint:  If there are too many to crunch up, rake the excess into your flowerbeds as a mulch.

Watering your lawn in summer

As summer approaches, people start watering their lawns - every day. This is not a good practice. Daily watering causes the roots to remain close to the surface and eventually causes the grass to die as the days grow warmer. A neighbor did this one summer.  He went on a week's vacation and came back to a dead lawn. It is best to water once per week for a very long time in the early morning. Many water at night, but the lawn grasses do not dry out and the lawn can suffer from the water remaining on the blades of grass. NEVER water your lawn in the middle of the day.  You will literally cook it.
