Good Manners
Good manners mark the gentleman and indicate the lady. Kindliness and courtesy mark the gentleman and lady. True nobility resides in character and is revealed in good manners. Costly and fashionable apparel does not constitute the wearer a gentleman or lady.
It is often regretted that our schools appear to disregard or do
really neglect the teaching of rules of etiquette or forms for behavior for the
pupils.
Among the Hebrews and Chinese great respect is shown to the aged.
The rest of us, however, do not follow the old rules of courteous behavior in the home. Good communications, i.e., wise and valuable instruction in courtesy and etiquette, would make all individuals excellent in every
way.
A gentleman is a man of truth and lord of his own actions. He
surrounds himself with polite associates, leaving rude people alone.
Why? Being with rude people tends to create a rude person.
Good manners will create good treatment from all who are met on
life’s road. A courteous remark or a kind smile will create goodwill as well as good manners and help the everyday life to be less wearisome and more cheerful.
Let the heart express itself in courteous speech, and let the polite speech be sincere. Surely nothing more could be required as evidence of good
manners.
